WASHINGTON, D.C. - February 6, 2017 - America's Public Television Stations (APTS) applaud Houston Public Media and Houston public safety offices which worked together during yesterday's Super Bowl to ensure everyone's safety. Using Houston Public Media's digital broadcast spectrum and datacasting technology to securely deliver live video, the City of Houston's Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security, Harris County Sheriff's Department and other public safety offices were able to share vital information on crowd management and communicate efficiently and effectively with each other in real time.
“America's Public Television Stations are proud of the ongoing partnership between Houston Public Media and Houston public safety offices,” said Patrick Butler, president and CEO. “Public safety is an essential mission of public television stations across the country, and Houston Public Media remains a true pioneer in this work. Keeping the public safe in such a high-profile event involving tens of thousands of people is a tremendous responsibility, and Houston Public Media and its law enforcement partners rose admirably to this challenging task. But they do this same work, more quietly but no less conscientiously and successfully, every day for the millions of citizens of Houston and Harris County, and we couldn’t be prouder of this remarkable partnership.”
“Houston Public Media is honored to work with local law enforcement and public safety organizations year round, including during yesterday's Super Bowl,” said Lisa Trapani Shumate, Associate Vice President and General Manager, Houston Public Media. “Our work in public safety is a critical service we provide to our local community, and we value the ongoing partnership with first responders which helps keep the local community safe.”
“The City of Houston's work with public media has been an important component in effectively carrying out our public safety operations,” said Jack Hanagriff, City of Houston, Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security. "Houston Public Media's cutting-edge technology gave us the ability to access and share critical information and video feeds in a way that would not have been possible a few years ago, before this collaboration. The City of Houston is proud of our ability to provide a safe and secure environment for world class events like the Super Bowl, and Houston Public Media is a valuable part of making that happen.”
